Fine Gael party leader, Enda Kenny TD, along with members of his front bench have outlined the core elements of the party’s ‘5-point plan to get Ireland working’. The plan is designed to create jobs, reform the health system, fix the budget crisis, make Government smaller and more cost effective and put the burden on politicians first.

When the Fianna Fáil party held their election convention last Sunday evening, it looked like the possibility that they would be running only one candidate in the county could become a reality. However the party left the nominations open until Wednesday night and at the last minute a new candidate was added to the ticket alongside sitting TD Dara Calleary. Lisa Chambers from Ballyheane, Castlebar will be joining Calleary on the ballot as Fianna Fáil look to retain the two seats they hold in the county at present. Chambers joins a field that has bloated since last week with five new candidates putting their names forward for election. Michael Kilcoyne ended the will he or won’t he suspense of putting his name forward at the weekend and the popular independent councillor who topped the poll last time out in the Castlebar area in the local elections will be a formidable opponent for the major party candidates. Also putting their names down on the ballot paper are two Ballina based independent candidates Martin Daly who is backed by the newly formed Mayo Reform Movement and Loretta Clarke. The Green Party will also be represented on February 25 with Kilmaine man John Carey being put forward by the junior partners from the last coalition government.

Pundits and the public alike are in agreement that the coming election will see a historic battle for supremacy between Fine Gael and Labour.

Following 12 hours of debate on Monday last Mayo County Council adopted a budget worth €131,952,449 for the year. The big talking point of the debate among the 31 councillors was the proposal by the council executive to increase water charges to non domestic customers by 10 per cent, an increase that was criticised by members from both sides of the house. Following much negotiation, the adopted budget will see an increase of 6.25 per cent in water charges for year, which was proposed by Fine Gael party whip Councillor Joe Mellet and seconded by party colleague Cllr Eddie Staunton.

While on a whistle-stop tour of Carlow Kilkenny earlier this week, Labour Party Leader Eamon Gilmore spoke confidently of returning at least one if not two seats for Labour in the constituency in the upcoming general election.

Mayo Fianna Fail TD Beverley Cooper Flynn was due to announce last night (Thursday) that she will not be running for election in the upcoming 2011 general election as she has decided to quit national politics due to family reasons.

Mayor of Castlebar and Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere has congratulated the Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, for an outstanding 35 years representing the people of Mayo. Mr Kenny was elected to Dáil Éireann on 12 November 1975 when the first ever Mayo West by-election was held. Fine Gael party colleagues in Castlebar Town Council, Cllr Brendan Henaghan, Cllr Eugene McCormack, and Cllr Noreen Heston, also extended congratulations to Deputy Kenny.
